Core Group For effective functioning of DUCS a dedicated team was required. In order to meet this objective, a “core group” was setup. This team consists largely of student volunteers who shall meet certain objective criteria. A description of such a core group member follows: A core group member is person who has decided to donate significant amount of time to ducs and its processes. He or she shall be knowledgeable of the processes of ducs, having participated previously in a variety of ducs activities. He or she shall have a significant amount of knowledge of computing systems, especially of the hardware and software used by ducs. This primarily includes knowledge of pc systems and the Unix family of operating systems, in particular of the gnu/Linux operating system. A core group member is also expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and quality, and display extra-ordinary commitment and dedication to the ducs activities. The tasks of the core group are summarized below: DUCS Administration The core group is responsible for ducs and all its activities. It is also responsible for the upkeep of the resources allocated to ducs. The group also acts as a centralized access point for anything related to ducs. In short, the core group “is” ducs. Technical Support The core group lends technical assistance to the Special Interest Groups (sigs) when needed. This is analogous to a sig “outsourcing” all non-core technical competence. The core group is also expected to compulsorily lend technical assistance to dbit when asked to do so. Coordination and Regulation The core group regulates accesses to ducs resources, and coordinates between the various sigs. Infrequently, the core group might also coordinate between various external non-ducs groups. Familiarization and Publicity The core group is responsible for familiarizing people with ducs activities and processes. In particular, core group members must work with a sig whose members have never worked with ducs before. The core group is also responsible for publicizing ducs work—which also includes sig work—in the most effective way possible and to as wide an audience as required.
